Who We Are

KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE is a cultural and social association founded in 2005 in Fort-de-France, Martinique. Our name, drawn from the Wolof language and meaning “The House of Tradition and Origin,” reflects the spirit of what we stand for: a deep commitment to cultural roots, shared heritage, and the solidarity that unites people across the Atlantic—from Senegal to Martinique and beyond.

Our association was born out of a simple yet powerful idea: that identity, culture, and human connection are the foundation of community life. At a time when cultural fragmentation and social isolation continue to challenge societies worldwide, we chose to dedicate our efforts to strengthening the bonds between Senegalese nationals living in Martinique, Martinican citizens, and all residents who value intercultural dialogue, mutual respect, and shared humanity.

From our modest headquarters at 40 Avenue des Caneficiers, Fort-de-France, we have spent nearly two decades building bridges—not only between continents and cultures, but also between generations, ideas, and experiences. KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE is more than an association. It is a living space of encounters, learning, preservation, and renewal. It is a home for anyone who believes in the richness of African and Caribbean heritages and the relevance of solidarity in our modern world.

Our Origins and Inspiration

The founding of KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE was inspired by the presence of a growing Senegalese community in Martinique—people who had migrated in search of opportunities, safety, or simply a better life, but who found themselves caught between two cultural realities. Many of them were far from their families and ancestral traditions. Yet, they also discovered in Martinique a land of cultural vitality, resistance, and diversity.

Our association was created to serve as a point of connection between these two worlds. We wanted to offer a place where people could gather, celebrate, support one another, and promote the values of solidarity, cultural pride, and open dialogue. From the very beginning, we committed ourselves to creating a space where African and Caribbean cultures could meet, merge, and be honored without prejudice.

Who We Serve

KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE serves a diverse and inclusive community. Our members and participants include:

  • Senegalese nationals living in Martinique, including both long-time residents and newly arrived individuals or families.
  • Martinicans interested in African cultures, history, and traditions.
  • People from other national backgrounds who value diversity and wish to participate in cultural or social projects.
  • Young people and students seeking a deeper understanding of identity, heritage, and intercultural exchange.
  • Elders and tradition-bearers, who carry the wisdom and experience of their homelands and who play a central role in transmitting knowledge.

We do not limit ourselves by nationality or origin. Our doors are open to anyone who values cultural expression, community building, and human dignity.

Our Cultural Identity

The cultural vision of KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE is rooted in the richness of Senegalese traditions—music, dance, storytelling, visual arts, culinary practices, spirituality, and language—but it is not confined to them. We also celebrate the broader African diasporic experience in the Caribbean and around the world.

We believe that culture is not something static to be preserved in a museum. It is alive, evolving, and always in dialogue with other cultures. Our programs seek to honor the past while imagining the future. We aim to make space for traditional griot storytelling and modern urban expression, for ancestral rituals and contemporary art, for both folklore and innovation.

At the same time, we recognize and value Martinican cultural heritage. The people of Martinique have a long and proud history of resistance, resilience, and creativity. We work to bring these stories into conversation with Senegalese narratives, fostering mutual understanding and appreciation.

Our Social Commitment

KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE is also a socially engaged organization. Culture is only one part of what we do. The other part is our commitment to human development, empowerment, and solidarity.

We organize activities that support the integration and well-being of Senegalese and other African immigrants in Martinique, including language support, administrative assistance, educational guidance, and mutual aid initiatives. We work with local institutions, schools, and community groups to promote social inclusion and fight discrimination.

We also serve as a platform for advocacy and voice. Through our events, discussions, and creative projects, we raise awareness about the experiences of African diasporic communities, the challenges of migration, the effects of colonial histories, and the possibilities of reconciliation and progress.

A Place of Belonging

Above all, KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE is a place of belonging. In a world that often divides people by borders, race, or background, we strive to create a space where everyone feels seen, respected, and empowered.

Whether you come to us as a Senegalese elder wishing to teach a dance or prepare a traditional dish, a Martinican youth looking to discover your African roots, or a visitor from elsewhere curious about cultural heritage, we welcome you into our community.

Our programs include:

  • Cultural workshops and exhibitions
  • Music and dance performances
  • Intergenerational storytelling sessions
  • Public forums and conferences on identity and solidarity
  • Language and literacy programs
  • Mutual support networks for those in need

We operate with limited resources, but our work is sustained by passion, conviction, and the generous involvement of volunteers and community members.

Our Vision for the Future

As we look to the future, we remain committed to deepening our work and expanding our reach. We envision:

  • Strengthened partnerships with local schools, cultural centers, and associations
  • New programs for youth leadership and education
  • Opportunities for cultural exchange between Martinique and Senegal
  • A permanent cultural center where events, classes, and exhibitions can be held year-round
  • A digital platform to share our knowledge, stories, and artistic productions with the wider world

KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE is not only a reflection of where we come from but a statement about where we wish to go—as a community and as a society.
