About us

Since its founding in 2005, KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE has stood as a beacon of cultural pride and social solidarity in Martinique. Located in Fort-de-France at 40 Avenue des Caneficiers, our association was created to promote and strengthen the bonds between Senegalese nationals, Martinican residents, and the wider community through shared cultural and social initiatives.

The name KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE reflects our dedication to roots and origins. “Keur” means “house” or “home” in Wolof, a major language spoken in Senegal, while “Thiossane” evokes tradition and ancestry. The addition “L’Origine” (The Origin) emphasizes the importance we place on cultural heritage and identity as foundations for community cohesion and growth.

Our Founding Story

The early 2000s marked a significant period of migration and cultural mixing between Africa and the Caribbean, especially in Martinique. Senegalese nationals, many of whom had moved to Martinique for work, education, or family reasons, faced challenges of integration and cultural preservation. They sought ways to maintain their heritage while embracing their new environment.

Recognizing this need, a group of Senegalese residents and local Martinicans came together with a shared vision: to create a space where cultural traditions could be celebrated openly and where social bonds could be built and nurtured. This vision led to the founding of KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE in 2005.

From the start, our association has been committed to fostering mutual understanding and respect between communities, countering social isolation, and promoting cultural exchange.

Our Core Purpose

At KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE, our mission is simple but profound: to promote and consolidate the links and solidarity between Senegalese and Martinican nationals, as well as all persons residing in Martinique. We achieve this primarily through cultural and social actions designed to:

  • Celebrate cultural heritage and identity
  • Support social integration and inclusion
  • Encourage intercultural dialogue and cooperation
  • Empower individuals and communities through education and mutual aid

These goals reflect our belief that culture and solidarity are inseparable. They are the glue that holds diverse societies together and the engines for social progress.

Our Evolution Over the Years

Since 2005, KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE has grown steadily in membership, scope, and impact. What began as a modest gathering of like-minded individuals has evolved into a recognized association that organizes a variety of cultural events, educational workshops, and community support programs.

Some key milestones in our journey include:

  • Establishing a permanent headquarters in Fort-de-France, providing a physical hub for activities and meetings.
  • Launching cultural festivals that showcase Senegalese music, dance, food, and art alongside Martinican and other Caribbean traditions.
  • Developing social programs that assist newcomers with administrative procedures, language learning, and job placement.
  • Creating partnerships with local schools, government agencies, and other associations to broaden our reach and effectiveness.
  • Hosting intergenerational events that bring elders and youth together to exchange stories, values, and skills.

Throughout these developments, our focus has remained steadfast: to build a welcoming, inclusive community grounded in respect and solidarity.

Our Cultural Programs

Culture lies at the heart of everything we do. We recognize culture as a living, dynamic force that connects people across time and space. Our cultural programs include:

  • Music and Dance Workshops: Teaching traditional Senegalese rhythms and dance styles, as well as contemporary expressions that reflect the evolving identity of the diaspora.
  • Art Exhibitions: Showcasing the work of Senegalese and Martinican artists to celebrate creativity and spark conversations.
  • Storytelling Sessions: Preserving oral traditions and sharing histories that deepen understanding of our origins and journeys.
  • Culinary Events: Exploring the rich gastronomies of Senegal and Martinique as a means of cultural exchange and enjoyment.
  • Language and Literature Circles: Promoting the learning of Wolof, French, Creole, and other languages to bridge communities.

By facilitating these activities, we create opportunities for cultural pride, education, and dialogue.

Social Solidarity and Community Support

Beyond culture, KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE is deeply committed to social solidarity. Our programs are designed to address practical needs and foster mutual support, including:

  • Assistance with Administrative Procedures: Helping members navigate immigration, housing, healthcare, and employment paperwork.
  • Educational Support: Offering tutoring, mentorship, and resources for students and adults seeking to improve their skills.
  • Health and Well-being Initiatives: Organizing workshops on health, nutrition, and mental well-being tailored to community needs.
  • Mutual Aid Networks: Facilitating support systems for members facing economic hardship or social isolation.
  • Youth Engagement: Creating spaces for young people to express themselves, develop leadership skills, and connect with their heritage.

These actions reinforce our conviction that cultural identity and social welfare are interdependent and essential to a thriving community.

Our Values

KEUR THIOSSANE L ORIGINE operates on a set of core values that guide all our work:

  • Respect: Honoring the dignity and diversity of all individuals and cultures.
  • Solidarity: Building networks of support that transcend nationality, age, or background.
